What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral therapy is a form of light touch body work that has evolved over the past 100 years out of the practice of Osteopathy, particularly the work of William Sutherland.
It is based on the osteopathic principle that everything in the body is in motion, and everything is connected. The cerebral spinal fluid is produced within the brain, and surrounds the brain and spinal cord to nourish and protect them. It is contained within a layered membranous system and has a rate of production and absorption of between 8-14 cycles per minute. This, the cranial wave or impulse, is occurring at our core throughout our lifetime affecting the bones of the skull and sacrum, the membranes that connect them, and ultimately our whole body.
In addition there are at least two other tidal rhythms affecting the human body. One, called “mid-tide” or fluid tide is occurring at a rate of 2.5 cycles per minute. The other, much slower and subtler, called “long tide” is occurring at a rate of once every 100 seconds. These three impulses are intersecting in the human body, and depending on its fluidity will affect how it functions.
A Craniosacral practitioner is trained to detect the tidal motions, and the system is supported to go to neutral or stillness, allowing the body to make it’s own inner corrections to restore healthy function.
Craniosacral Therapy is beneficial in:
Concussions
Brain injury
Headaches/Migraines
Whiplash
Temporomandibular Joint syndrome (TMJ)
Strains/Sprains
Trauma including post traumatic stress disorder
Birth trauma
Fibromyalgia
Stress and tension related disorders
Sinusitis
