How Does Craniosacral Therapy Work?
To understand Craniosacral therapy it is helpful to think of it as working from the “inside out” rather than something being applied on the outside and working on the inside.
Imagine that the human body is a fluid filled sac, in which everything is in motion, and everything is connected (surrounded by fluid, connected by fascia and connective tissue). As fluid sacs we are all connected by the atmospheric tides, sometimes referred to as the breath of life, or life force or primary respiration. Therefore, if a part of the body is blocked (ie after trauma), or in an unusual movement pattern, that part may be detected as not moving with the whole. The trained practitioner will use gentle touch to listen to the body, to detect movement both normal and abnormal, to detect inertial patterns where the body is stuck, or where there may be too much chaotic energy that the body is trying to contain.
Stillness is at the core of every movement pattern; stillness is at the core of our being.
The practitioner first aligns with their own core of stillness and from there may detect the movement patterns of the client. There is an inherent treatment plan in all of us, the body seeking health, and so by practitioner contact the client comes to that place of stillness and it is from that point of stillness that inner corrections are made. From the stillness, the breath of life or primary respiration can breathe into areas that were blocked, releasing excess energy, or opening areas that were compressed.
Often the client will experience deep relaxation. This is one of the natural healing mechanisms of the body, allowing inner adjustments to occur.
“When you lose touch with inner stillness,
you lose touch with yourself.
When you lose touch with yourself,
you lose yourself in the world”
